What You Should Know about Dentures

What You Should Know about Dentures | NOLA Dentures and General Dentistry

If you are in New Orleans and need dentures, we can help. Dentures are a big part of what we do in our dental practice. Dr. Russell Schafer sees hundreds of denture patients each year and has a gift for creating dentures that look and feel great for our patients – something not every dentist is able to do effectively!

If you are considering dentures, facing extractions, or if you have ill-fitting dentures, here are a few things you should know about dentures.

Dentures do not last forever!

Because your bone density changes as you age, your dentures may need to be replaced every five years or so. It is common that we can reline your dentures for a couple of years with great results, but once a certain amount of bone loss occurs, we will need to replace your dentures.

Dentures need a regular exam!

Just like our patients, their dentures can benefit from at least a yearly exam where we will examine your dentures, their effectiveness, and look for any cracks or damage that can collect bacteria or make denture use painful.

Dentures are fragile!

Never leave your dentures in a hot car, or boil them! This can distort your dentures and completely ruin them, making them useless and voiding your investment. They are also susceptible to breaking if dropped or if you bite into something unexpected. Treat them carefully.

Denture adhesives are not ideal.

Long term use of dental adhesives are not ideal. If you regularly use an adhesive, we recommend that you come to our office for a denture evaluation. Often, we can provide a better solution to comfortable dentures. If you have experienced bone loss, we may even use dental implants to lock your denture in place, giving you greater security.

If you need a New Orleans denture dentist, give us a call! We look forward to helping you get the most out of your denture treatment.
