Lady Suffering Jaw Pain

TMJ or TMD, when used in abbreviation, are common ways to describe disorders of the temporomandibular joints. These joints, located at the junction where the jaw connects to the skull, allow for eating, speaking, and yawning.

At NOLA Dentures and General Dentistry, I’m pleased to offer TMJ treatments and solutions in Gretna, LA.

Causes and Signs of TMJ

TMJ may result from an injury, anatomical issue present at birth, grinding and clenching your teeth (bruxism), or unknown.

If TMJ results from bruxism, you may notice wear and tear on your teeth and, eventually, tooth fractures. You may also see exaggerated musculature in front of the lower ears.

Other signs of TMJ include:

  • A clicking sound in the jaw joint, especially when yawning
  • Head, neck, shoulder, and jaw pain
  • Difficulty opening the mouth wide or doing so with pain

You don’t have to present with every symptom to be diagnosed with TMJ. If you have even mild jaw pain, it’s best to schedule a diagnostic appointment at my dental office.

I can evaluate your TMJ to determine the best treatment course for you. Some treatments may also curb bruxism, which can aggravate the TMJs.

Gentle TMJ and Jaw Pain Treatment

Some therapies, such as temporary dietary restrictions or specific jaw joint exercises, may be self-administered. I can also create a custom splint or nightguard to rest the TMJs and curb bruxism.

In severe cases, surgery may be warranted. However, I’ve had good luck with splint therapy for the suitable candidates.
