What are One Day Dentures in Gretna, LA?

One Day Dentures are dentures that are designed digitally and fabricated with a 3-D printer using a material that is similar to white fillings. They are then polished, cured, and personalized to make sure they fit well. Your dentist in Gretna, LA can make adjustments while you wait.

You and Dr. Schafer will discuss whether or not One Day Dentures are the right solution for you. He will often recommend them for patients who need a temporary denture, a back-up denture, or a healing denture. He does not recommend them as a final denture because while the material is solid, it cannot be customized to a patient's mouth as individually as custom or permanent dentures.

What is the process for One Day Dentures?

Technology at our New Orleans Dentist OfficeDr. Schafer will first take a model of each jaw to measure the mouth as well as a model of the bite to know how the jaws line up. The model is then digitally scanned into a computer.

The dentures are fabricated with special software so that they can be as tight as possible.

They are then printed out 50 microns at a time so that they provide an exceptional fit to the patient. After the denture is printed, it must be hand polished and can be customized a bit to each patient.

After this, Dr. Schafer treats it like his other dentures and asks patients to return at least three times: at one day, at one week, and at one month. He will work with you regularly to make sure that the fit is correct and that your bite is functioning well with it. He will also place liners as needed if the gums are still healing.

If you need a denture or partial quickly, please give us a call so that we can schedule you for a complimentary exam for One Day Dentures in Gretna, LA.

Why is it important to replace my teeth?

If you’ve suffered tooth loss, or if you have had extractions due to decay or trauma, it is crucial to replace your teeth for health purposes and to help you feel more confident.

When you have missing teeth, it may lead to teeth shifting, bite alignment issues, enamel wear, cavities, root infections, and even further tooth loss.

Missing teeth can also impact the way you speak and your ability to chew and digest food properly.

At NOLA Dentures and General Dentistry, we provide One Day Dentures—including partials—because we want to restore your smile and your overall wellness as soon as possible.

How often should I replace my dentures?

Dentures are much like cars. Some people replace their vehicles because they want a better or prettier one. Others replace cars when the vehicle starts getting worn down and not working as well as it did brand new. Many people will even wait until their car breaks down and is no longer functioning to decide it's time for a new model. Dentures are the same way.

Dr. Schafer, your dentist in Gretna, LA, recommends replacing a denture every 5 to 10 years. Over time, the mouth with no teeth will change shape, and the denture will no longer fit as comfortably as they once did.

Also, while dentures are made from sturdy materials, it is still plastic, and plastic does wear down and break. When the teeth and dentures wear down, wrinkles become more prominent, the lips and cheeks sink in, and the overall face seems to shrink, giving you an older appearance. A new set of dentures can add vitality to your face and to your smile.

Signs that you may need a new denture include:

  • Needing to apply adhesives more often during the day
  • Denture not fitting as snuggly as before
  • Cracks or chips in the denture plate
  • You want to upgrade to a more modern or attractive denture

How do implant-supported dentures work?

Most people function well with upper dentures by themselves. The reason is due to the suction. Still, though, some patients want a better fit for their denture, and then we recommend implants. With dentures, we rely on a minimum of four implants to support your smile, but sometimes as many as six are used.

The two main reasons for placing implants to hold a denture are either to make the denture fit more comfortably or to make it more retentive. As the traditional upper denture gets its retention from the suction, the entire roof of the mouth has to be covered to get the best possible suction. For people who want to remove this, placing implants allows the dentist to remove this portion and therefore thin out the denture quite a bit without weakening the appliance. Sometimes the denture has to be remade with a metal base—much like a cast partial to help support the denture.

Dental implants are thin screws made from durable titanium. These screws replace your tooth roots and are strong enough to support an arch of restoration teeth.

Patient before dentures | Gretna LANew Dentures | Gretna LA DentistWill my dentures look natural?

Frequently Asked Questions

Older couple smiling | Dentist in Gretna LA Generally, a new set of dentures does not require any denture adhesive. However, many patients who have worn dentures for a long period of time feel more secure wearing denture adhesive. The denture adhesive in these cases fills in the gaps between the denture and the gums. These gaps form over time as the gums change shape and shrink which is why it is recommended to have a new liner placed in the dentures every 5 to 8 years and a new denture made every 8 to 10 years. While the adhesive works well for a short-term measure, the problem with long-term use is that it creates pressure spots on the denture causing faster shrinking of the gums.

Dental Implants over Adhesive

When patients feel that they need adhesive as soon as a new set is made, it is a better idea to start considering implants. While implants are more expensive than adhesive, they allow for the denture to feel more natural and chew more comfortably.

Woman getting dentures | Gretna LA DenturesShort answer, yes it will at one point or another. While Dr. Schafer makes a lot of fantastic dentures, no matter how good of a job he does, a denture can still be removed by the hands, which means that it can fall out of the mouth. For first-time denture wearers, the dentures will slip out simply because the mouth has not learned how to work around the denture and the denture feels foreign. It is especially true if it is an immediate or healing denture. Dr. Schafer works with each of his patients to help them feel comfortable while learning to use their denture because it is important that everyone feels comfortable with their smile.

One day dentures (also known as temporary dentures or same-day dentures) are a great option for people who are waiting on their permanent dentures to be created. Creating high-quality dentures to fit your mouth takes time and effort. The entire process can take a month or two and require multiple visits.

That may seem like a long time, but the multiple visits give your mouth time to heal after tooth removal and give Dr. Russell Schafer and his staff time to adjust your new dentures to the perfect shape and fit so you can enjoy a comfortable set of dentures and a fantastic smile!

However, if you are in need of temporary, one day dentures, that option is available so you will have dentures to wear while you wait on your permanent pair. One day dentures allow you to have dentures placed in your mouth immediately after your tooth extraction.

If you and your dentist decide using one day dentures is the right choice for you, you may be wondering how long they will last.

How Long One Day Dentures Last

Your one-day dentures are made to last for several months, but they have been known to last for years. They are designed to help you eat and live normally while you wait for your new set of dentures to be made. One day dentures are not a permanent denture solution.
